"Take it on faith," I was told...
...but why should I? Is there a reason? Is there an experience? Is there evidence of this "God" I should trust with my will, future and decisions?
Ignorance is no foundation for trust.
Reason And Believe is designed to provide Christians with a compilation of logic, reasoning and resources for understanding how God could logically exist and what Christianity is all about. Christians have doubts and questions that deserve to be answered.
What is the motivation for Reason And Believe?
Raised in a Christian home, I've always known the Bible stories and doctrines of Christianity. I never understood WHY I believed, however. I was always told, "You have to take it on faith," and sometimes, "just trust in Him," when questions were asked. I have experienced the goodness of God multiple times in my life. Thankfully these experiences were enough to hold onto the belief of God through many years of doubt.
In school I was taught Darwinian Evolution as if it were factual and not a theory. The Christ I believed in did not line up with the "facts" I was being taught in school. Therefore my belief in Christ was based solely on experience and trust in my parents, church and the Bible. I was never able to justify my faith other than by my upbringing or experience. I couldn't defend Christianity or the existence of God in an intellectual conversation. This led to more doubt and frustration.
Tougher questions arose the older I grew. Questions regarding philosophy and the meaning of existence. This is when doubt really started to do its work in my life.
It wasn't until several years later that I realized there are flaws in the Theory of Evolution (as they were not discussed in school as they should be.) I didn't know there was sound philosophical reasoning for the existence of God.
I found more and more evidence and reason to believe in God (belief that was only from experience before.) I no longer had to rely on feelings and hope but now had evidence that was logically sufficient. Excitement weaseled its way into my life that was previously filled with anxiety and depression. Now I have a hunger to seek God not only with my heart and soul but with my mind as well.
Although human kind will always deal with doubt, it is essential to understand why a Christian believes in a God that contradicts the modern world view.
